Antonio Rudiger gives update on Chelsea comeback ahead of weekend game

Germany international Antonio Rudiger has indicated that he may not rush his return to Premier League action despite playing through a complete game for Chelsea’s development squad.

The centre-back has already returned to full training with his Blues teammates and most recently, he played through the entire 90 minutes of the Blues Under 23s’ 3-0 triumph over Liverpool Under 23s.

Despite this, the 26-year-old has hinted that he is still short of match fitness following a knee surgery and he won’t necessarily rush a comeback with Frank Lampard’s side with a long campaign ahead.

“I’ve been back for almost two weeks with the team and I’m feeling better each day but of course there is still game fitness missing, which is what I need to get better,” he told the official Chelsea website.

“I know I need to be patient. There’s no need to rush anything at the moment because we have a long season to go. You have to go day by day and that is what I’m doing.”

The Blues defence struggled during the season opener at Manchester United where a poor second half performance saw them suffer a heavy 4-0 defeat despite dominating the play at one stage.

Since then, the displays at the back have improved on a game-by-game basis and Cesar Azpilicueta has probably been the only let-down which has genuinely cost the team.

As such, there seems no need to rush Rudiger for the central defensive duties, particularly with Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma finding a better understanding between themselves.

The west London side are scheduled to tackle newly-promoted Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday and the game promises an open contest with the Canaries preferring an attack-minded style of play regardless of the opposition.

This should play into the hands of Frank Lampard’s side, considering the Blues have the better quality of players within their ranks, and should put the pressure on the Canaries backline, which remains a weak point.
