Frank Lampard confirms injury boost with key defender available against Brighton

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed a key injury boost ahead of the Brighton & Hove Albion game with defender Andreas Christensen managing to recover from a minor knee concern.

The Denmark international picked up the knock during the first half of the Premier League defeat to Liverpool last weekend and he was thereafter replaced by Kurt Zouma prior to the interval.

Shortly after that game, Lampard said that the centre-back won’t be sidelined for long and the 41-year-old has now confirmed that Christensen will be in contention for the weekend’s league clash.

“Andreas should be okay. He trained with us today. He has missed most of the week. He still has a tiny bit of pain but it’s hopefully not a risk. He will be in the squad,” he was quoted as saying on the club’s website.

Despite Christensen’s return, Lampard may not necessarily feature him from the starting lineup, given he has admitted that the centre-back still has a bit of pain from the setback last weekend.

In this case, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma are the most likely central defensive combination and the latter should go into the game with confidence after grabbing his first goal for the club in three years during the midweek League Cup tie against Grimsby

Elsewhere, Olivier Giroud is likely to return to the matchday squad after overcoming an illness while the same goes for Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James, who returned to first-team action on Wednesday night with standout displays.

Hudson-Odoi capped his return from a long-term Achilles injury with a goal in the 7-1 win over Grimsby but James was undoubtedly the star of the Cup tie with one goal and two assists in his maiden appearance for the Blues.
