Picture: Chelsea provide positive injury update on key defender

Chelsea have provided a positive update on Antonio Rudiger, who has been sidelined for more than a month with a groin problem.

The Germany international made his Blues comeback after a lengthy knee injury in September but he managed to play only 45 minutes against Wolverhampton Wanderers before suffering a groin concern.

Blues boss Frank Lampard has since failed to provide a return date for the versatile defender but he appears to be making good progress, given he has recently returned to outdoor training.

Here is a post from Chelsea on their official Instagram account…

In the absence of Rudiger, Blues graduate Fikayo Tomori has shone at the heart of the defence and his performances have earned him a maiden call-up to the England senior squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma have regularly swapped positions for the other central defensive role and the trio have improved on their defensive displays as the season has progressed.

Nonetheless, they have struggled to shut out their opponents and the club have bagged just one clean sheet from the opening eight league games as well as the Cup competitions.

Blues boss Lampard has already experienced a couple of setbacks with Emerson and N’Golo Kante when they have been rushed to first-team action after their respective injuries and he will surely be cautious with Rudiger.

While Emerson continues to remain in the treatment room with a hamstring concern, Kante has managed to overcome his early season niggles and has started the past two games across all competitions.
