‘Painful to watch’, ‘Get rid’, some Chelsea fans blame one player after League Cup exit

A particular section of the Chelsea supporters have expressed their frustration towards Marcos Alonso following the club’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the fourth round of the League Cup.

The Blues had gone into the game with the opportunity to avenge their 4-0 loss to United earlier this season but was not meant to be as the Red Devils progress to the last eight of the Cup competition.

Marcus Rashford made the difference with a penalty and a world-class free-kick and the former resulted from a clumsy foul by Marcos Alonso on winger Daniel James.

Alonso did end the game with three successful tackles and four interceptions but he was also dispossessed on a couple of occasions and gave away a few fouls on James, whom he struggled to cope with.

This has certainly infuriated some of the club’s faithful and a few of them believe the Spaniard does not deserve to make the team with the vulnerability when it comes to the defensive side of his game.

Twitter reactions:

Alonso started the season as the second-choice left-back behind Emerson but injuries for the latter have meant that he has jumped ahead in the selection order under Frank Lampard.

Emerson has made just one cameo appearance since his return from a thigh problem and it will be interesting to see whether the Italian will be able to regain their starting spot in the upcoming games.

Elsewhere, Lampard has the option of fielding Cesar Azpilicueta on the left side of the defence with Reece James on the opposite end but so far, that has not been the case from the starting lineup.
