Chelsea are being heavily linked with PSG hitman Edinson Cavani. The Uruguay international has fallen down the pecking order in the French capital, with a move a realistic possibility.
The Telegraph are reporting Frank Lampard is interested, although the Blues would face competition from Atletico Madrid. The report also suggests former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho would be interested, but wages are an issue for the North-London club.
The 32-year-old could offer world-class competition for Blues striker Tammy Abraham. The youngster has made an excellent start, but lacks serious competition. Olivier Giroud is yet to complete a move away, but the Frenchman is likely to see a move to either Inter Milan or Aston Villa completed by the end of the transfer window.
Cavani offers a pedigree that the Blues are in need of. Prolific during his seven-years at PSG, he has scored 198-goals, in 292-appearances. You could question the standard of opposition, and he hasn’t been a regular in recent years.
However, the Uruguayan’s all round ability is not to be questioned. Quick, strong, great positioning sense, and also a set-piece specialist.
Some fans are unsure though. This time last year Chelsea signed another South American, Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentine failed to impress Chelsea fans in his five-months at the club. Netting five-times, it’s hard to pick a highlight from his spell. Other short-term choices have also failed to dazzle at Stamford Bridge.
Alex Pato and Radamel Falcao both failed to rediscover form that made them famous for their goalscoring prowess. On the plus side, Samuel Eto contributed during his spell, and going back further, George Weah was a success. Remembered largely for his debut winning goal against Tottenham.
There’s still 10-days left of the window. It’s been frustrating for Chelsea fans so far. Especially after the drama surrounding the transfer ban. Frank Lampard has played his cards close to his chest, and this rumour is exciting.
If it happens then great, if not this season has proved to be a rollercoaster. Realistically the Blues are overachieving. A signing or two could play a huge part in securing a top-four finish.
