TCB Opinion: Hakim Ziyech would prove a better option than Jadon Sancho

It’s no surprise the Blues are in the market for a winger. Even before the transfer ban was lifted, rumours of an new additions were rife.

Willian and Pedro will both see their contracts expire this summer. If as expected the pair fail to reach an agreement on new contracts, Chelsea will only have Christian Pulisic, and Callum Hudson-Odoi as their wide man options.

Jadon Sancho has been continually linked with a return to the Premier League. Having starred for Borussia Dortmund since leaving Manchester City, the 20-year-olds next move would be to prove himself back in his homeland.

Reports suggest the winger will not be short of suitors. Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham are all alongside Chelsea vying for his signature.

The Guardian are claiming United would be willing to open the bidding at a huge £120m. A lot of money, but no doubt worth it for a player of such a young age with a proven record of high quality performances.

However, Chelsea do have other options. One cheaper alternative is Hakim Ziyech. The Ajax man has been linked with the Blues on more than one occasion.

The latest link comes from The Telegraph. Matt Law claims Chelsea have already approached Ajax about the possibility of a deal. The Dutch giants knocked the Blues approach back, but only because they’d rather he spend the rest of the season with them.

The 26-year-old would offer better value for money. Although Sancho has all the potential, the Morroccan international would be available for nearly a third of the reported amount Sancho could move for.

At £42m, signing Ziyech would give Frank Lampard an opportunity to spend his hefty kitty elsewhere. The winger has proved himself during his three-and-a-half at Ajax.

In 159-appearances, Ziyech has scored 48-goals, with an incredible 82-assists to his name.

Now you can argue that Sancho offers more, particularly with potential. Ziyech’s statistics are impressive, but is the Eridiversie as good as the Bundesliga? Probably not.

Signing both would give Chelsea great options, but personally if I had to choose, based on value, I’d pick Ziyech. Lampard could then strengthen other areas of the squad. If the kitty is bigger than reports, then maybe things will pan out differently.
