Chelsea have been linked with Timo Werner for most of this season. During January Frank Lampard looked intent on signing a player to compete with Tammy Abraham.
Despite the likes of Edinson Cavani, Dries Mertens, and Werner being linked, Chelsea ultimately didn’t add anybody to the squad.
Werner has been in incredible form for RB Leipzig this season. Scoring 20-goals, in 21-appearances in the Bundesliga, the 23-year-old also has six-assists to his name.
Top clubs across Europe are waiting eagerly to get an opportunity to acquire his services. Liverpool have been strongly linked, with Jurgen Klopp hoping to bring his fellow countryman to Anfield.
What is even more amazing is the fact that Werner has a release clause of around £50m. However, there’s a catch… Well respected Bild journalist, Christian Falk, has tweeted that there’s a date in which a deal must be done for clubs to effectively grab a bargain considering the strikers form.
Any potential suitors have until the end of April to agree a deal. Chelsea have already completed some early business. Hakim Ziyech has only yo agree terms on a £42m switch from Ajax.
Could Chelsea get another deal done early?
Marina Granovskaia was criticised by some fans after January’s failure to sign players. Ziyech being tied down so early gives an indication of what the Blues director has been doing. A successful attempt to add Werner to the ranks would put those critics into perspective, and make them eat some humble pie.
There’s no doubt Chelsea face huge competition, especially from Liverpool it seems. But there’s nothing wrong with dreaming of another key signing being done and dusted before the summer transfer window opens.
